Hitorangi Clan of Rapanui

Aloha to our families and friends………

The battle being fought by our Polynesian brothers and sisters on Rapa Nui (Easter Island) continues…..On Tuesday, February 8, 2011, the Hitorangi Clan will be violently evicted and criminalized for the occupation of their ancestral lands.  The heavily armed Chilean troops have surrounded the Hanga Roa Hotel where the families have housed themselves and the troops are keeping anyone from coming in or leaving; the Clan has no way of communitcating with their families or attorneys. Our goal and urgent request is to raise $6,000 by FEBRUARY 5TH. Even the smallest amounts of donations is desparately needed; $10, $20, etc. all of which will go to help cover the legal fees of the Hitorangi Clan; the cost to cover filing fees, attorney travel costs to and from the island to the mainland, etc..  All other legal fees are being provided pro bono by the Indian Law Center.  You can make your donation by going to the Saverapanui website:  http://saverapanui.org/donate/html.  The Indian Law Center has set up a PayPal service specifically for this purpose and your donation is entirely tax deductible.  There is no court system on Rapa Nui so the costs to travel back and forth between the island and the mainland is mounting.  We are urgenlty seeking your support and the support of your networks as the battle is ongoing.  Time is of the essence.  Our ‘ohana on Rapa Nui needs our help in preventing their culture and people from being lost forever.  Your donation will help to pay for the legal protection of the Hitorangi Clan and ensure the protection of the Rapa Nui people from the heavy-handed assault by Chilean troops on an unarmed population.

Please visit the saverapanui.org website for updated information which is posted as it is received.  There you will be able to view a video of the attacks being harbored against the people of Rapa Nui and other information relative to the plight of the Rapa Nui people. The need is urgent; we are LESS THAN A WEEK AWAY from the case being heard in the courts in Chile.  Please help to get the message out. Your support is greatly appreciated.

Mahalo,

‘Update from Rapanui 12/5/2010

Today, Sunday December 5, 2010 tensions are running on Rapanui. Chilean special forces are hunting for individuals who have been involved with the reoccupation and those they are targeting who have helped share the story with the international press.

The word out that tonight by 5 AM there will be a massive violent eviction of all the properties. Everyone is in a state of panic. People on the island say “There is a void of justice and an absence of due process.”

Chilean President Pinera and Minister of the Interior Hinzpeter have presided over the heavy-handed actions by police. They are staunch rule of law advocates and members of the Pinochet party. By refusing to give title to the Rapanui of their lands, the administration is in violation of international law and in violation of Chilean law which requires that only Rapanui people can own land on the island.

Senator Carolina Tohá, President of the “Democracy Party (PPD)” declared that the repression on Rapanui was typical of the current government who sought always to enforce their opinions, rather than argue them.

Senator Juan Pablo Letelier, Socialist Party, visited Minister of the Interior Hinzpeter to declare that a government never should take measures against their own population. Senator Letelier is President of the Latin American Commission for Human Rights (ALDHU)”.

Communist Party Deputy (Congressman) Hugo Gutiérrez condemned the police actions on Rapanui, saying that he is going to urge his chamber to conclude an autonomy statute for the island with an eye to resolving the disputes. Such an autonomy statute has been formulated and debated in the Chilean Congress since 2008, but yet to be enacted.

On Friday morning Chilean troops violently dislodged from their home Margarita Pakarati Tuki, Verena Ika Tuki, Stella Ika Pakarati, Roberto Carlos Ika Pakarati (shot in his knee and rifle but in head), Miguel Tuki Atan, Richardo Hito, they remain under arrest.

When the Rapanui gathered to protest this action, Chilean Special Forces starting firing their guns and using tear gas. The Rapanui responded by throwing rocks.
21 Rapanui were shot and injured including Richardo Tepano, who lost his right eye and was flown to Santiago for medical care. There are no official reports or details of any police being injured despite statements that have been made.’
